Backyard Conservation Workshops: Seed Harvesting and Storage

with SAN JUAN SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT (SJSWCD)

Spend a Saturday—or many Saturdays—developing and improving conservation practices to bring beauty and diversity to your yard, regardless if your yard is measured in acres, feet, or flower pots. Learn skills that farmers and ranchers use to help them meet their production goals while protecting natural resources. Workshops have the bonus of free materials given to the first 25 registered participants, under guidelines of grant funding and availability. These workshops can be taken individually for $10 each. Each class is 9 am-noon, Saturday, in room 1925 at San Juan College, with fall 2021 options planned for either online delivery with a live Zoom workshop or physical attendance. Freezer Meal Boot Camp

Pack your freezer for the school year! Meet Friday night to learn the basics of the process and Saturday create 8-10 meals in one day. Learn tips to ensure your meals are healthy, affordable and family favorites. $100 supply fee payable to instructor at the first class covers 8-10 meals for 4 people each. Register no later than 8/16 to ensure that the instructor has all supplies. Appropriate for ages 13 and up. 7.5 hrs

ERICA RAWSON has taught fitness classes at San Juan College for seven years, and has been cooking freezer meals for over 10 years. She has taught this popular workshop since 2019.

Learn to Fly Fish

Fly fishing is a distinct and ancient angling technique that can provide hours of enjoyment. Gain both the practical knowledge and handson skills—from wading safety and reading water to aquatic entomology so you can differentiate between various types of flies. Before buying fly fishing equipment, learn what you really need and how to buy it. The class includes three field trips: two days with three hours of casting and one full day on the San Juan River to use everything you have learned. You can rent equipment for class use, and students will need valid fishing licenses before the last field trip; an overview of supplies will be discussed at the first class. Appropriate for ages 14 and up. 26 hrs*
(15 max; additional last days will be added if more than 6 students)

JUNE TILLIAN has been baking gluten-free for 18 years, for daughter, grandson and friends diagnosed with celiac disease. She has a Master’s degree in Education and is now retired after 27 years in education. She taught in elementary school and middle school and worked as a high school librarian.

Beginning ‘Ukulele

Interested in learning how to play a new instrument? Ever wanted to pick up the ‘ukulele but didn’t know where to start? Learned how to play a few uke chords before but anxious wanting to learn more? Learn the basics for strumming, chord progressions, and playing full songs on the ‘ukulele. We’ll also discuss the history and cultural aspects of the Hawai‘i-born instrument that is rare to learn about outside of the Pacific. Bring your uke and get ready for waves of fun! Appropriate for ages 10 and up.

Mountain Bike Maintenance and Repair

Would you like to be able to fix a mechanical issue with your mountain bike when you’re on the trail, far from home? And be able to perform routine maintenance on your own bike? Learn preventative maintenance you can do at home and trail side skills for emergency repairs, with hands-on practice so that you’ll feel confident to care for your bike. Experience a safety inspection, how to properly clean your bike, tubeless tire set-up, chain repair and replacement and numerous other specific repairs. Learn to diagnose creaks and squeaks, prepare for emergency repairs on the trail, identify necessary tools and find problems early before they become costly fixes. Bring your own bike.
