Backyard Conservation Workshops: Soil Health: Compost, Mulch, and Cover Crops (free composter)

Spend a Saturday—or many Saturdays—developing and improving conservation practices to bring beauty and diversity to your yard, regardless if your yard is measured in acres, feet, or flower pots. Learn skills that farmers and ranchers use to help them meet their production goals while protecting natural resources. Workshops have the bonus of free materials given to participants, under guidelines of grant funding and availability. These workshops can be taken individually for $10 each. Each class is 9 am-noon, Saturday, in room 1925 at San Juan College, with fall 2021 options planned for either online delivery with a live Zoom workshop or physical attendance. Please provide an email that you check regularly for online access. Free materials will be given to the first 25 students registered.

Too much bounty? Take the mystery out of canning and learn to can safely to enjoy your produce for months to come. Gain the confidence you need to safely can in your own home using proven methods for safe food preservation. Instructor will bring water bath canners; plan to bring two new, wide-mouth pint size canning jars with two-piece lids to each class and go home with canned fruits and vegetables. $15 supply fee payable to instructor at class. 4 hrs

It’s open time to get assistance with completing your current projects – whether new, beginner or experienced veteran. Bring a project you just can’t seem to finish—or get started on those favorite gifts. For those who have always wanted to learn how to crochet, the time is now, with hands-on instructions. Beginners will learn basic stitches and finish a scarf. Bring size 4 light color crochet yarn (not variegated or multi-colored), size G, H, or I crochet hook (with a wooden or rubber handle) and small scissors. Appropriate for ages 15 and up (10-14 year-olds welcome with a parent registered in the class). 12 hrs

Learn to Fly Fish

Fly fishing is a distinct and ancient angling technique that can provide hours of enjoyment. Learn the basic knowledge you need to step into the water, such as wading safety and reading water. Understand aquatic entomology so you can differentiate between various types of flies. Before buying fly fishing equipment, learn what you really need and how to buy it. The class includes three field trips on the San Juan River: two days with three hours of casting and a day to use what you have learned. You can rent equipment for class use. If the class has a large enrollment, class will be divided into two separate field trip days. Students will need valid fishing licenses before the last field trip. Appropriate for ages 14 and up. 26 hrs. Field trips (San Juan River): 11/6, SAT, 9 am-noon (3 hrs) 11/13, SAT, 9 am-noon (3 hrs) 11/20, SAT, 9am-5 pm (8 hrs)

Get more manners! This class focuses on behavior around other dogs and people and covers everything you need to know to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen assessment done at the last class. If you have not completed Intro to Manners call The Focused Fido at 719-431-3102 before signing up. $10 supply fee payable to instructor at the first class. Appropriate for ages 18 and up. Registration is limited to 2 people per dog, with the same person attending all sessions. All persons who attend the class must be registered through San Juan College. As an off-campus class, both SJC and NM Public Health Guidelines will be followed. 6 hrs

Dog Training: Intro to Manners

Positive reinforcement training encourages your dog to learn and creates a relationship of mutual respect between you and your canine companion. Learn the basics of dog manners, including cues such as sit, stay, down and how to manage behaviors such as jumping and leash pulling. This class uses positive reinforcement, reward-based training with treats and praise. Bring a leash (4 ft or 6 ft, no extendable leashes, harness is preferred, flat collar accepted), lots of soft treats, poo bags and your dog’s current vaccination records; dogs must be current on vaccines. Please wear comfortable, weather appropriate clothes and shoes. You will go home with a complete training book, whistle, and a clicker. Appropriate for dogs 10 weeks and up. If your dog has displayed any aggressive, reactive, or extreme fear behavior with other dogs or people call The Focused Fido at 719-431-3102 before signing up. $10 supply fee payable to instructor at the first class. Appropriate for 18 and up, accompanied minors are accepted. Registration is limited to two people per dog, with the same person attending all sessions.
